Disengagement: Causes and cures (1/2)

When employees start chronically underperforming, you know you are in trouble. Today, unfortunately, the problem of disengagement is growing and some employees put increasingly less effort into their work. What are the causes of this problem? Managers who are emotionally distanced and do not give their team any real opportunities.

Management-issues.com advises asking employees to contribute in new ways and not being afraid to assign them challenging responsibilities. If you are not careful, in the end your workers could end up bad-mouthing the company whenever they can and this will have a negative impact on all their colleagues. They will also waste time, which is just one more thing that harms the productivity of the whole organisation.

No challenges and few opportunities

Managers can’t always find the time to learn about and support their direct subordinates, whom they view more in terms of functions than real people. Other problems are not offering opportunities for growth or not involving your staff in what you are doing. Denial of opportunities to learn new skills and a lack of possibiliities for personal growth will inevitably lead to disengagement.

Lack of information

Never leave your employees in the dark. Share information with them, especially if you know they appreciate it. More information leads to more engaged employees – but, of course, you shouldn’t overwhelm them. Another important thing is timely and effective feedback. You must be able and willing to provide it to your employees; otherwise they might feel abandoned and not know what they are doing right and what should be done differently.

Playing favourites

When employees cannot be sure whether it is friendship or true productivity that gets rewarded, they quickly become discouraged and confused. The same also applies to personal accountability, a lack of which will result in resentful and less enthusiastic employees.
