The right CMO will bring customers to you and turn your company into an excellent brand.

Strategic approach

Strategy is not about goals – it is about how your company drives its mission. Your CMO needs to see the big picture and also understand all crucial shifts and trends. You need someone who knows the market and competitors well. A CMO also must grasp the synergy that exists among all the components of marketing: product and pricing, communications and content, social media, brand and distribution, growth and user acquisition.

What to ask:

  • Is there a company whose marketing strategy you admire? Why this company?
  • What was the rationale for your marketing strategy at your previous company?
  • Tell me more about your target audience at your previous company. How did you position your offerings?

Leadership

You need someone who is able to motivate and lead people. CMOs are often also the face of your company for the public.

What to ask:

  • What particular crisis have you handled and what did you learn from it?
  • How did you handle the most severe conflict in your team?
