The importance of setting goals

Goal setting is of paramount importance for anyone who is serious about attempting to achieve success. There are good reasons for this.

As famous speaker Brian Tracy says, goals help us understand what we want to achieve in life.

Goals help provide focus

If we know what our goal is, we are laser-focused on the tasks that can really help us to get ahead. Without focus, we waste a lot of our efforts and energy. So get rid of all those idle moments when you don't in fact know what you should be doing.

With goals, we can measure progress

In order to track our progress, we need to set goals in the first place. Only then can we measure what progress we have achieved. This is not only extremely rewarding: it also helps greatly in maintaining focus and energy levels.

If we are able to measure progress, we may know we are on the right path even if final success is still neither tangible nor visible. When we see we have made movements in the right direction, we are much less prone to giving up on that goal.

Goals are excellent for staying motivated

If there is no goal, it is easy to procrastinate and leave all tasks to the next day. When we have a destination to aim for, the desire to reach it keeps us working even if at times we might feel like taking a day off.

With goals, procrastination disappears

When we set goals in life, these specific goals help us see how procrastination is dangerous and poisonous. We will be aware of how bad it is to waste time because a day wasted is just one more day during which we haven’t moved any closer to our goal.

With goals, we achieve even more

When we set a goal and then reach it, we are winners. That is a great feeling and it makes us want more. Therefore, by setting goals and achieving them, we are pushing ourselves towards the next round. To put it simply: by setting goals we end up achieving more.
