What is your work-life balance?

Most people have difficulties in finding an appropriate way to balance their professional and private lives. Thanks to mobile phones and the internet, we're accessible 24 hours a day, and it doesn't help us reach a good balance. Is work-life balance just a myth? Can we live a happy and fulfilling life outside work? Fastcompany.com tells us we can – if we stick to the following principles which divide people capable of separating their work and private lives from those who can't.

1. Decide what you want

To achieve balance, you have to know what is important in your life and how you want to spend your time. Then you should tell the people around you so that you can manage it together.

2. Say what works and what doesn't

Communicate with the people around you about what has worked in organizing your activities and what hasn't. Be an inspiration to them.

3. Schedule time for your family and friends

Don't expect to have free time after work. Plan your time and follow your plans. Although unexpected situations may occur at work, try to give as much of the time you scheduled to your family as possible.

4. Define your balance

You should know your values and follow them. Balance means different things to different people. Find the balance that suits you.

5. Don't get distracted

Learn how to turn off your phone and computer when you want to do something you like doing. Do only one thing at a time and learn to relax. That will really make your life easier.

6. Create a support network

Help other people and make friends who will also help you when things go wrong. Focus on your hobbies, meet new people and do new things. Be open to new experiences.

What does work-life balance mean to you?
