Maintaining motivation (3/3): When you are at work

It's no secret that some days are easier than others in terms of finding motivation - even in an environment where we spend so much of our lives. Here, in the third of a series of articles, the focus is on work motivation.

Focus on what matters

Don't try to solve a dozen projects at once. Instead, focus maximum effort and attention on one task at a time and don't allow yourself to be distracted. This will make it easier to maintain motivation and you will not be frustrated that you can't do anything properly. Make a daily list of things you need to do and prioritise them. Set aside the most demanding tasks for when you are most productive.

Practise positive affirmation

Positive affirmations are a powerful tool that can be used to achieve a wide range of life goals, including motivation and productivity at work. An example of such an affirmation might be: "I am ready to tackle the day and produce my best work." And you will repeat this every morning before leaving home. The magic is that our subconscious mind gradually starts to believe what our conscious self is saying repeatedly.

Celebrate your successes

Ticking off a task on your list is a victory that takes you one step closer to your goals and should be celebrated as such. It doesn't matter how big or important this task was. Just celebrate. It's all too easy to have a negative attitude to work that completely disrupts motivation. So take time to celebrate your achievements rather than brooding over the work you have yet to complete.

Set your own goals

Goal setting and motivation go hand in hand, and research shows that if you have autonomy over your own goals, you are more likely to achieve them. Of course, many employees cannot do this  because they have their goals set for them. Nevertheless, you can still be part of this. For instance, you might ask your manager to allow you to participate in goal setting as a kind of incentive. If the manager agrees to this, you will need to prove you are setting useful and achievable goals.
