Cutting-edge leadership: two types of behaviour

What we now know about leader behaviours which are crucial for effective leadership is that there are two key components.

These are:

  • Task-focused behaviour
  • Relationship-focused behaviour

Task-focused behaviour

This behaviour is about creating the necessary structure for work in order to fulfil given tasks. It is about setting up operating procedures, measuring outcomes and making important decisions. All such activities, which are somehow connected to work tasks, are necessary for success.

Relationship-focused behaviour

This category of effective leader behaviour concerns mutual relations betwen the leader and their subordinates. It is about showing respect for the feelings and needs of colleagues. It is also about appreciating them, allowing them to participate in decision-making and fostering their self-esteem.

What are the implications for leaders who want to be truly effective?

If you are in a leadership position, you should conduct a self-assessment to see how you are doing.

  • Note how often your behaviour is focused primarily on the task
  • Note how often your behaviour is focused on relationships

Leaders may prefer one kind of behaviour over the other. They may be very concerned about getting the task done. Or they may be trying to do their utmost in order to build relationships with their subordinates.

If you find out that you may be over-emphasising task-oriented behaviour, relations with your team members might become weaker and thus less productive than they could be. If you are focusing too much on nurturing relationships, you might fail to create the necessary structure for enhancing the efficiency and output of your team.

It is useful to do this exercise from time to time because we can always improve. This is the conclusion of an article at psychologytoday.com.
