Not focusing on just one strength

A personal brand is the perception others have of you. People around you need subconsciously to associate you with a particular strength or positive trait. However, if you try to promote all your strengths at once, your external communication becomes unclear and people are left unsure of what to think about you. Think like a marketer and, when promoting yourself, focus on highlighting one, or at most two or three, key strengths.

Not promoting yourself loudly enough

The ability to praise yourself and present your own achievements effectively isn't easy. Most people need to learn this skill. Handle your impostor syndrome, believe in yourself, and start promoting your successes and skills with sufficient confidence and volume.

Trying to please everyone

Just as marketing campaigns have their target audiences, so should you when promoting your personal brand. Who are you trying to please? Who are you aiming to reach? Potential subordinates? Colleagues? Future supervisors? People in a specific field with decision-making power? Define your target audience and tailor your personal brand presentation accordingly.

Not authentic enough

People can tell if you are pretending to be someone you are not, imitating someone else’s style in your LinkedIn posts, or using AI to generate text. You have to be authentic. Build your personal brand around your own genuine qualities, and rely on your strengths rather than trying to pretend.
