Empowering your team
Regardless of the size of your team, you can do this. You can create a culture of empowerment which helps to retain top talents. Believe in your team, share your vision and mission with them. Inspire them, don’t just assign tasks.
As a manager, your primary duty is to encourage autonomy. Repeat to people that they need to make their own decisions and not wait for what you tell them to do. How about monitoring of work? This is not mandatory for all types of work. You can choose to monitor only critical projects or tasks which have the highest impact.
Support your people, allow them to fail
What you should monitor are signs of distress or when communication is not open. Just don’t intervene in individual tasks of your team. If you do feel the urge to micro-manage, you ought to aim more at offering mentoring and support. Also allow other people the possibility of making mistakes. However, it must be clear that mistakes are okay only if people quickly learn from them.
Your staff may go against your advice. In that case, keep calm and support them anyway; otherwise, you will undermine your own efforts truly to empower them. If a decision ultimately fails anyway, be there to share the responsibility. If it turns out to be a success, give credit to others. Build trust in people.
