Your subordinate manager dislikes managing people? You can help

There may be some managers who do not enjoy the people-related aspect of their job. They are annoyed by annual reviews, they dislike solving personal issues and are unable to find ways of motivating their team. Clearly you have a major problem ... and there are only three ways of dealing with it.

The best way is to provide the dissatisfied manager with proper training. Acknowledge that managing people is sometimes very difficult but make sure the manager realises how important this part of the job is. So train and coach the manager. However, if this doesn’t help, start looking for a replacement. This is the advice from an article on the management.about.com website.

1) Hire an assistant manager

Your subordinate will thus be spared some of the pressure. This is a good solution in the event you want to keep the employee in your organisation, maybe for that person's vast experience and deep knowledge. Consider, however, whether the additional salary is worth it. True, the costs need not be too high, but even so ...

2) Ask your superior

You may be uncertain what to do but as a manager you should be able to handle such situations as this one. If you do decide to go to your own boss for help, the boss may begin to doubt whether you are as good at your work as you ought to be and conclude that you yourself are the one who needs additional training or even that you should be replaced by someone more competent.

3) Offer more training

The good point about this solution is that it addresses not just the symptoms but the very root of the problem. Managing people forms a substantial part of any managerial job. If a manager dislikes this particular aspect of the job, you might help by giving them the necessary tools for dealing with people. Don’t be afraid to invest some money in the training. In the end the cost will not exceed the cost of finding a new manager or an additional assistant to support the current one.
