Presenting to an uninterested audience (2/2): Additional tips

The previous article described how to motivate an audience that initially shows a lack of interest. The key is to align oneself in terms of energy and interest at the very beginning and that way create a rapport.

Then comes the second step: you need gradually to increase your energy and enthusiasm. The audience will then follow you and become more enthusiastic.

Now let’s look at another two tips that the presentationmagazine.com website recommends to presenters who may face an audience that is just disengaged.

Answer the unasked questions of your audience

You can always motivate your audience by showing what is in it for them. That is basically the most important thing you can tell them in order to gain their attention.

Often the root of low motivation and interest of an audience is their inability to see the relevance of the topic. Why is it important to them personally? Why should they care? These questions often remain unasked – and therefore also unanswered.

So tell them what is in it for them, as all good presenters and also good teachers do. They know they need to be willing to give up some of their time to make the relevance of the information clear. Therefore, you too must do likewise with your audience.

The bottom line is: don’t make the mistake of assuming your audience understands the benefits your presentation offers them. Just say it out loud. That way you have a better chance of making your audience feel motivated.

Make your presentation interactive

Nobody likes to be talked at continuously. If you are able to involve your listeners, the motivation of the audience will go through the roof. And there are many ways to do that.
