Learn to savour the moment (2)

The previous article described the concept of savouring the moment and how to go about it. This second part will examine in more detail how you might seek to create and incorporate such moments in your own daily routine.

Create more relaxing moments

If possible extend the time available to enjoy more the things you like doing. Of course, this is not always so easy, so set aside at least twenty minutes a day when you will do something relaxing. The fact is that people routinely take breaks during the course of a working day anyway but seldom use them to the full: on the contrary, they often just fritter them away on social media or otherwise playing on their mobile devices.

There are numerous alternative ways to relax, depending on your location or the time of day:

  • having a cup of coffee at a pavement café
  • browsing in a bookshop
  • strolling in the local park
  • watching the sun go down
  • if you are musically inclined, composing a short piece for your favourite instrument

Change the pace

The hectic tempo of modern life creates a sense that we have no time to enjoy things properly. But if there is no objective reason for you to hurry, make a conscious effort to slow down. Eating more slowly will enable you better to savour the flavour of the food; reading a well-written text more slowly will mean you not only absorb the content but may also appreciate the elegance of the style.

Of course, slowing down does not mean allowing yourself to lapse into lethargy. Nor is it always possible to slow down whenever you feel like it, as any mother of small children will know only too well. But nothing lasts forever anyway. The important thing is having the right mindset so you know how to savour precious moments as and when they occur.
