Is your mindset agile or anti-agile? (1/2)

Market forces make it necessary for us to adapt and learn all the time. In emergency situations, top-down direction may be called for; most of the time, however, broad empowerment is more beneficial.

Every leader and every manager must empower their teams. You need to encourage a desire to respond quickly to changing conditions.

If you stick to a traditional command-and-control model of managing, response times will be slower and creativity in your organisation will be limited. This warning comes from an article on the management-issues.com website.

Develop an agile mindset to adapt to new circumstances

An agile mindset is basically a desire to learn and improve things. People need to be curious and willing to approach new opportunities. So managers should be role models of adaptability to their teams. The result will be easier acceptance of change and opportunities.

The concept of "agile" first appeared in IT; the purpose was to make software development faster and more efficient. This approach was later used in project management, stressing the need for collaboration. Now it is spreading through the remaining sections of organisations.

Today agility is about the ability to anticipate new opportunities, then respond to these and other challenges quickly and effectively.

What to assess

You need to analyse the degree to which you have an agile mindset. Ask yourself the following questions. What do you do in order to tell your colleagues that you:

  • encourage collaboration and autonomy?
  • take calculated risks and allow others to do the same thing?
  • promote and appreciate flexibility?
  • accept mistakes – and that you also expect they will happen?
