Getting things done (in half the time)

When in the office, the true challenge is to create some pauses between all the phone calls, emails and other distractions in order to get some actual work done. Here is some advice from Brian Tracy.

Efficient time management is essential. If you master this, you will be able to manage your tasks and reduce the stress you feel. However, how to motivate yourself to work hard at the office? There are several simple steps you can deploy, thus doubling your productivity.

1. Working before working hours

If you get up at 4:30 a.m. you can spend as many as 3 hours working before you actually get to your office. It’s quite possible that these 3 hours will be the equivalent of almost an entire working day, when taking into account all the distractions you face!

2. Arrive at work 1 hour before your working day begins

No traffic jams means less time spent in the car. This early there are no colleagues in the office, so no one will disturb you. If you avoid distractions by arriving earlier, you can immediately start working your way through your daily responsibilities. It may be the case that you manage to finish most of your daily workload before lunch.

3. Don’t waste time by going for lunch with everyone else

You can get your lunch before noon or a few hours later – there is no law to be broken by that. During that hour when the offices are almost empty, you have time to finish your reports, polish up your presentations ... without any interruptions. And there is another advantage: in restaurants there will be significantly fewer customers. You get back to your desk without all the delays caused by crowds.

4. Take an extra hour after everyone has left

If you take advantage of this extra hour, you will have another uninterrupted moment when you can plan the next day and finish work that otherwise would remain undone. Close the door, forget about your cell phone and finish the work: then there will be no backlog tomorrow.

These tips will help you to increase your productivity. All that is needed is a little effort to do things in a way whereby distractions are minimised and you can focus on your to-do list.
