The bottom line is that you are by no means lost just because you struggle to improve your attention span. Typical patterns of focus and distraction are an inherent part of one's personality. To maximise your career potential it is maybe better to identify roles for which you are a natural fit. This is the advice of the Harvard Business Review.

So if you are easily distracted, you might leverage your natural personality inclination and aim for the following careers.

Consultant

There are different types of consulting careers. Accounting or taxes may be exceptions but, as a general rule, consulting tends to be far from routine. You will have many chances to put your openness to new experiences to good use. Expertise is a prerequisite for a consulting career; nevertheless, what is decisive is a willingness to learn. Each assignment is likely to be unique and you will have plenty of chances to learn something new and develop your expertise.

Journalist

You also might consider journalism. This career often combines elements of the three previously described careers:

  • You must be able to brand yourself just like an entrepreneur
  • You need to be open and reactive to the news all the time
  • You have to want to switch from one topic to another and explore new domains

All the distractions you experience will be opportunities to learn. It will be less about what you already know than what you can know and what you can learn. As a journalist, you will be a constant learner – which means you will be able to make sense of a constantly evolving world.
