Direction

According to Science Daily, the basic trait of a quality boss is primarily the ability actually to lead. This might sound banal and obvious, but too many people at management level still fail to guide and motivate their subordinates properly. Common problems include undefined rules, an inability to communicate, lack of a common goal and direction, as well as sudden and frequent changes in plans and agenda. All this results in many bosses spreading uncertainty and confusion rather than making their employees feel self-confident and motivated.

Space

A quality boss knows how to select their employees and then place trust in them. They allow their staff sufficient space for their own initiatives and actions, they do not bind them with too many strict rules, and they listen to their opinions. If you cannot trust your subordinates, you yourself are at fault because either the rules have been incorrectly set up or the workers poorly chosen.

Praise

Many managers are so busy monitoring the mistakes and mishaps of their employees that they have no capacity left for praising anybody. But praise from a boss is a surprisingly effective method of motivating employees to give their best performance. Do not underestimate the power of words of praise and remember that everyone likes being commended for good work. If you pay insufficient attention to praise, it might happen that your workers will be frustrated and unhappy.
