The ability to apologize is a key but often neglected part of successful professional communication. It helps to close conflicts, separate the past (a problem) and the future (a solution) and share responsibility on both sides. Most common mistakes in apologizing involve the use of phrases like: "I'm sorry that you feel it differently." or "Admit that much of this is your failure as well."

How to apologize professionally? Cbsnews.com brought 7 tips.

1. Separate apology and explanation

First apologize and take your time with explaing unless the other party accepts your apology.

2. Ask for opportunity to explain what happened

If you want to talk about the situation so that it is not repeated in the future, offer space for discussion. However, if the other party does not want to discuss, do not push it.

3. Try to apologize in person

If possible, apologize face to face or at least via a video call or Skype. Only then use the phone and finally email.

4. Prepare possible solutions

When the situation requires solving a problem, prepare possible solutions. However, before you offer your solutions, ask for suggestions of the other party.

5. Take full responsibility

Do not point youor finger at others and their partial guilt. Apologize for the whole situation.

6. Focus on the future

Close the tension between you by the apology and focus on what needs to be done after that.

7. Move on

As soon as you apologize and the other party accepts your apology, there is nothing to go back to.
