Do you really know your potential?

People often lack the ability to evaluate their own talent. We tend to think we are better than we really are. That's why we can't fully develop our full potential.

Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, a recognised expert in psychometric testing, professor of organisational psychology at University College London and CEO of Hogan Assessment Systems, discusses this fact in an interesting article on fastcompany.com. He says that people who want to fully exploit their potential must overcome the following three obstacles.

1. Lack of self-awareness

We often don't realize our inadequacies because we don't get feedback. At the same time, we also often ignore the feedback we get. However, if we want to develop our potential, we must be as humble and self-critical as possible. Look for the people around you who will look you in the eye and tell you the truth. It won't be pleasant at the beginning, but it's worth it.

2. Lack of motivation

The greater the talent we have in a certain field, the less we have to work hard on doing it well. However, developing a talent requires motivation. We often only talk about what we want, but we're not willing to do whatever we have to do in order to achieve it. Truly successful people are obsessed with their goals and this motivation gets transformed into a natural talent.

3. Focusing only on strengths

Concentrating only on your strengths can be dangerous. It's equally important to know your weaknesses and problematic behavioral tendencies.
