Everyone wants to be more successful. Whether we seek to improve our skills, develop our career or run a thriving business, we all have a desire to achieve something. But if you have been working on your goals for some time, you will have certainly encountered a number of obstacles. You may even have the feeling that you will never achieve your long-term goals. And that's why mastermind groups exist.

What is a mastermind group?

Believe it or not, the concept of the mastermind group has been around since 1937, so it is now over 80 years old! Napoleon Hill promoted the idea in his books The Law of Success, The Magic Ladder to Success and Think and Get Rich. Hill originally called the groups "mastermind alliances". According to his vision, people would meet, come up with ideas and support one another in their goals. Hill's explanations were largely based on his analysis of American companies that used the master model. Each person's mind stimulates the other minds in the room. Hill considered a group of masters to be a way of organising useful information and putting it in one place so people who needed it could benefit from it.

Today, mastermind groups bring together leaders, entrepreneurs and business owners, who mentor and inspire each other to achieve their goals. You participate in regular meetings and brainstorming sessions in the group. The concept is unique because you meet people who are usually in the same professional phase as you. This peer-to-peer mentoring model can be very successful if you connect with people who motivate you.

Mastermind groups help create an environment of full mutual support in solving the problems you encounter. Some groups are virtual, while others take place as physical meetings. Most groups of masters meet regularly for a set period of time - for example, twice a month for half a year. During meetings, you can discuss useful topics related to business, trade or, for example, marketing and other areas you are currently addressing. These might be, for example, personal productivity, etc.

Types of mastermind groups

Mastermind group based on industry
You will find, for instance, a group for people who work in marketing, technology or life coaching. This model may be very useful because you can address specific areas and issues that are directly relevant to your industry.

In any group of masters, you are already surrounded by like-minded people, but by joining a group from the same field, you will be able to connect with them even more.

Masters groups by profession

Some groups of masters are based on occupation. Such groups are usually narrower than industry groups, which means you can learn highly relevant skills exactly for your profession, whether it's marketing or specific technologies.

Online groups vs. attendance groups

Many groups meet online using an interactive video platform such as Zoom; others meet in person. In a face-to-face meeting, networking is easier and people are more involved; you'll be less tempted to leave and you can take more out of the meeting. In an online environment, meetings will save you time and may be easier for you to overcome any embarrassment at the beginning. Plus you can connect with amazing people who live all over the world, not just in your own city.

The second article will focus on the benefits of mastermind groups and the expectations that can help you fulfil them.
