Four tips on managing subordinates working from home

Working from home is nowadays the norm for many teams. They operate in the so-called hybrid mode, whereby employees partly commute to the office and partly work remotely. However, managing people who are not physically present at the workplace requires a specific approach. Here are four tips on effective management of subordinates working from home.

Set up clear communication processes

In a situation where employees do not meet at the workplace every day, it is essential to have clear communication processes in your team put in place. Communication must not stall as there is no opportunity to clarify things in the office. Establish clear rules and channels through which communication within the team will take place.

Ensure everyone knows exactly what to do

A strict division of roles within the team is even more crucial for teams working in hybrid mode or solely from home than those whose members go to the office. Again, any grey areas or confusion about who should do what are much more difficult to explain via remote communication.

Do not neglect socialising

Even if your team is hybrid or works from home, you should not neglect socialising. With a remote team there are no spontaneous meet-ups by the coffee machine or over lunch. Yet these are the situations in which relations between employees are cemented. Even if your team works remotely, you should try to organise virtual meetings and events that bring the team together.

At individual meetings with subordinates, do not be distracted

During video calls, people are tempted to do something else on their computer screen while talking to the other person. However, this would be a big mistake in one-to-one meetings with subordinates. Employees will always recognise you are not fully engaged in the call. Pay proper attention to your subordinates and never try to engage in other activities during individual meetings.
