Getting London ready for the Games

“I worked for Transport for London until 2005. As soon as I heard that London’s Olympic bid was successful, I knew I wanted to be involved.

“I was one of the first people permanently recruited to the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) – my employee number is five. The ODA is responsible for building the Olympic venues and transport infrastructure supporting the games.

I am the principal finance and commercial manager for transport. The total Olympic budget is £9.3bn. Transport accounts for £900m of this. Approximately half of the transport budget is being spent on capital infrastructure improvements – extending the Docklands Light Railway, for example. The other half is focused on running the transport operation during the games.

Our capital infrastructure work is nearing completion. We’re now heavily involved in the operational planning for games time. This involves day-by-day, 15 minute by 15 minute pedestrian and road traffic modelling. Data from initial ticket registrations is already being fed into these models. On the seventh day of the games we expect the transport system to handle approximately 800,000 additional people.

My CIMA qualification has been extremely helpful. It’s a broad qualification that enables me to deal with directors and senior managers on a level footing and manage all aspects of the finance process. I wouldn’t have been able to do this job without the knowledge CIMA gave me.”
