Four pieces of advice for managers leading a remote team

Technological progress, plus a shift in people's expectations and attitudes due to the Covid pandemic, have led to many teams switching either entirely or at least in part to remote working. However, this new model of team work poses specific challenges to the team leader. Here are four tips for leaders of teams working remotely, either completely or just partially.

Tip no. 1: Revaluate the traditional KPIs

First of all, you must keep in mind that the processes, rules and key performance indicators (KPIs) that always applied in the past do not necessarily apply in this new model of working. If you are still working with the same KPIs as before, when your team was present in the office, it is time to consider whether your procedures might be obsolete and need revaluating.

Tip no. 2: Make communication easy for employees

Effective communication is the key to successful teamwork. Especially when it comes to remote work, you must make communication as easy as possible for employees. Conduct a detailed audit of current communication procedures and channels and make sure that communication does not get stuck anywhere.

Tip no. 3: Be very specific when assigning tasks

Although you should always try to avoid micro-management, when working remotely, you need to be more specific when delegating work and ensure everybody knows exactly what they should be doing. By not seeing your subordinate employees present at work, you do indeed have less information about what they are working on and whether they might be wasting too much energy on tasks of minor importance.

Tip no. 4: Take more interest in employees' mental health

Last but not least, you should pay more attention to your subordinates' mental health. Beware of signals suggesting they are not handling their role well, that there is a danger of burnout or that they lack social contact. In comparison to the standard working model, these signals may be harder to detect when working remotely.
