Are you going to be a manager? You may be surprised, but this job has lots of similarities with becoming a parent. Both parenthood and being a manager cause excitement and anxiety. Salesandmarketing.com described three situations with advice that can be helpful.

1) Everybody is different

Do not worry if your team does not work as it did when you were on a lower level. Be open, and get used to the fact that everyone works in his own way. Not everybody needs to be as organized as you are or make the same number of calls as you do. You are the manager and your job is to lead your team and teach them how to get better results.

Do not force your people to use your methods. It is better to coach them and show them how doing it your way can help them to succeed. It is probable that they will like your method and will want to use it. Moreover, you will be respected.

2) You do not always have to be nice

Being nice is not always the best approach. Everybody might like you, but performance may be low. If anybody from your team is underperforming, tell him and let him know it is not acceptable. If somebody is consistently late to meetings, give him a warning. You have to balance your approach of being liked and meeting the goals your boss has set for you.

3) Do not go into too much detail

Of course, sometimes it is important to discuss details. For example, when goals are consistently not being met, or if you have an employee who needs to be watched a bit more, for whatever reasons. You will gain more respect from your team by listening to them. Then you can criticize if necessary. For example, if your team has low activity and do not meet targets, ask them what obstacles are getting into their way. Ask them questions that will help them to think effectively about the situation.
