The world of work in 2050 (1/2)

The world of work has been changing rapidly in recent years hand in hand with speedy developments in technology as well as society as a whole.

Clothing, for example, isn't as formal any more, and completely new jobs have emerged, such as specialists in the strategic use of social media.

People no longer work for one or two companies during their lifetimes. They don't have to work in one place or adhere to fixed working hours either.

What else will change in the coming years?

The Buisness Insider website asked experts on how they think the world of work will be like in 2050. They think the following trends are most likely.

1. No more traditional management hierarchies

Today we can already see the trend of reducing the number of management layers in organizations. We even have structures such as holocracy with no bosses at all. In 2050, hierarchical systems won't work or even exist. They will be replaced by a system consisting of a network of people and artificial intelligence.

2. Elimination of some jobs due to the progress of artificial intelligence

A lot of mostly manual jobs will soon be mastered by robots. Experts from Oxford University predict that 50% of the workforce will be replaced by artificial intelligence as soon as in 2030.

3. Creation of new jobs due to the progress of artificial intelligence

New technologies will, however, not only take jobs away. New roles will emerge, but the question is what roles they will be. We can assume that new jobs will include, for example, operating artificial intelligence technologies. People will learn how to use these technologies better and better.

4. Decline of full-time employment

It will be cheaper and more flexible for employers to cooperate with global networks of freelancers. Workers will be able to choose what tasks to work on with more flexibility and how many hours to spend working. The question is whether people will be freelancers just because there will be no other possibility to find a job, and how society could run in this way.

5. End of retirement

People will live longer, which will involve increased cost of living. Funds saved on pensions won't be enough. So, we'll work as long as possible. The achievements of modern medicine will help us by supporting our health.

Do you agree with these estimates? What do you think work will be like in 2050?

In the second part of the article, we will introduce five more anticipated trends.
