"Look for a new job": How to prepare for being laid off

Your job might be in jeopardy for a variety of reasons, some of which are under your control and others not. It is crucial to notice in time that things are worsening. Pay attention to red flags to avoid being caught off-guard.

The worst part is the lack of control you may feel when your company starts downsizing or a sudden merger appears. What you need to do is assume the initiative and take control of your own life.

Taking proactive steps

There will be a lot of stress and challenges but you can do something to transition smoothly into a new company. And some things can be done immediately, according to the Harvard Business Review.

Cultivate a broad network

Cultivate a strong network both inside and outside your organisation. Tap professional organisations and mentoring circles. Attend conferences, meet new people and seek new fields. Stretch your thinking. As traditional linear career paths are rare, we all need to investigate and identify opportunities for ourselves.

Ask for advice

When your job is at risk, you are in a vulnerable position. The stress may mean you stop thinking clearly. In that case, seek support from people who can offer reliable advice about career options. Talk to your contacts before applying for vacancies in new fields. Understand what is going on in the industry you are considering joining.

Identify potential gaps in your skill set. If your job search becomes a lengthy process, have someone to support you in moments of self-doubt and decreased motivation.

Foster your branding

If you expect to be looking for a new job soon, update your resume and polish your Linkedin profile. Add your latest roles, responsibilities and achievements. It is good to keep a weekly list of accomplishments so that, when the time comes, it will be quick and easy to update your personal presentations.
