Don't reject Facebook as a career development tool

Do you want to build for yourself the position of an influencer in your field? Then there is no better place to start than on social networks. You may consider LinkedIn the most suitable as the world's largest professional social networking site. However, try to think about how much time people spend on Facebook compared to LinkedIn. Most of the people you want to connect with can be better reached via Facebook.

We often have distorted ideas about Facebook, assuming it has nothing to do with expertise and career. That is a mistake. Most highly influential people in their fields have Facebook profiles and more often respond to messages sent via Facebook than via LinkedIn.

So how to use Facebook to develop your career and personal brand? A recent article at Forbes.com recommended the following steps.

1. Make your Facebook profile public

Before you do this, review your recent posts and remove those that may not not show you in the very best light. Be careful, however, not to come across as too perfect. You must be genuine.

2. Don't engage only virtually

Most people share posts on Facebook like on a blog. Try to be different by drawing attention to yourself via meetings with real people. Try to reach out to local schools, libraries or communities, and offer yourself as an expert to speak on a certain topic. You might also organise a professional course, workshop or webinar for people who are just starting out in your field. Promote these actions on Facebook and share your experiences.

3. Connect with other professionals

Follow other experts and influencers from your field and don't be afraid to contact them. Facebook communication is much less formal than that on LinkedIn. For example, if you read an interesting article or book, you can write your opinion to the author. You can share your experience or ask something. That is an easy way to build a network of contacts who will give you more credibility in the eyes of others.
