How to be a truly good and modern manager in 2024

Technology is evolving rapidly, employee expectations are changing, and remote working is the new standard in many companies. How to become a really good manager who motivates and supports their subordinates while keeping modern trends in mind?

Do not fear artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence has been on the rise in the last few years. Some people are afraid of machines taking all our jobs; others claim that AI is actually nothing new. The truth is probably somewhere in between. AI may have been with us for a long time, but it is now available to the masses and can be used in very specific situations and for specific tasks. As a manager, you should not be afraid of AI or discourage your subordinates from using it. On the contrary: help them incorporate AI into their daily routine and you will make their jobs easier. Also find ways to use AI effectively in your own work.

Be flexible

As Director Magazine notes, ideas of what the ideal worker looks like and what standard and expected working conditions are have changed significantly over the past few years. Workers expect flexibility and if you, as a manager, were to cling to previously outdated ideas and rules, you could be unnecessarily losing out on quality workers. Be flexible, be understanding, and offer subordinates the opportunity to organise their work as much as possible to their own liking.

Focus on sustainability

Sustainability in this case is not meant only in the environmental sense. It refers to the long-term sustainability of work, access to work and work-life balance. Workers today (and not just younger ones, as the stereotype claims) no longer want to be drained dry by work, so to speak. They want work to have a sustainable place in their lives and be free of worries about neglecting their personal lives even when they are performing at their best. Thus you should focus on sustainability by giving subordinates the flexibility to adapt their work. Do not try to exhaust all their energy in a short period of time. Promote their mental health, prevent burn-out and support their education.
