Social media in project management: To use or not to use?

Project management success depends to a considerable extent on the ability to effectively share information. Project managers are therefore searching for the best possible communication methods and technologies. Today it is especially social media that is available as a method that could be very suitable for communication within projects. But it could also be a dangerous method. So before you decide to use social media, ask yourself the following questions.

Are you willing and able to put together a strategy for communication that uses social media?

The same thing that applies to other collaboration tools also applies to social media: you will not be able to use them fully without a strategic plan.

What types of projects are you working on?

Highly sensitive projects require strict rules for information sharing that you cannot fully comply with when using social media.

Are people in your industry able to take advantage of the benefits of social media?

Whereas in some industries social media are the daily bread, elsewhere the approach to them is relative conservative. For example, the situation will be different for marketers and lawyers.

Is your organization among the early adopters of modern technologies?

If your company is not one of the most flexible companies in this sense, your chances of using social media in your project are small.

Do you already use social media in project management at least informally?

If yes, then you are well on your way to making this a formal practice.

Do you work with geographically dispersed teams?

Organizations with decentralized teams whose members are used to working remotely using mobile devices are in the best position to include social media in their projects.

Is your current communication platform effective?

If you are looking for improvement opportunities, definitely consider including social media. But it is unnecessary to implement an innovation just for the sake of implementing something new.

Is your organization open to changes?

Consider all of the risks associated with risk management.
