Determine your goals
According to the Brian Tracy blog, the first step is to determine what it is you want to achieve. These goals will then define your entire strategy and the structure of your self-discipline. Define what you want and write down these goals on paper so you can see them.
Define when you want to achieve the goals
Determine the time frame in which you want to achieve your aims. The temporal aspect is crucial in self-discipline as it prevents you from postponing your tasks forever.
Prepare a plan
Based on the defined goals and time frame, come up with a plan of how you move from your current position to the target. Ideally, you should divide this route into daily tasks which you will then fulfil.
Identify your distractions
Each of us has some distractions, things that lure you away from what you want to work on. Find out what distractions prevent you working on your goals and try to eliminate them as much as possible, or at least reduce their impact.
Don't be too hard on yourself
Don't be too strict. Plan relaxation too. Don't set goals that are too ambitious or barely realistic. The reason is that if you then fall behind schedule, you may become frustrated. So allow yourself a bit of slack and be proud if you can stick to your plan at least 80% of the time.
