Hard skills needed for the role of the given employee
First you have to determine whether the candidate has the hard skills necessary to perform their role. If you find someone who would get along with everybody and be a great fit to the team on a personal level but they lack essential technical and expert knowledge, this is a serious obstacle you must take into consideration when making your choice. Always evaluate a candidate's skills in relation to those of the other team members. What skills are lacking in the team, what should the candidate be able to do, and what new assets will they bring?
Same values, opinions and attitudes
On a personal level, the new candidate should not be too distant from the current employees. This does not mean they have to be of the same demographic group as their potential colleagues: on the contrary, diversity and heterogeneity are always beneficial to teams. But at the same time, the candidate should share the values that are absolutely essential to your team and company.
New perspectives
Last but not least, you should think about not only how the candidate will fit in the team, but also what they will bring to it. A new team member should share the same values as their new co-workers, but they should also offer a new perspective, a fresh outlook. The new employee should not just replenish the current staff, but also enrich it.
