Four ways to ensure subordinates are effective problem-solvers

Every manager should try to teach their subordinates to solve problems in an independent, fast and efficient way. Unfortunately, some team leaders are prone to micromanagement and will not even allow subordinates to make independent decisions and solve problems. Other team leaders give subordinates too much freedom and do not guide them or help them learn to solve problems effectively. The ideal leader lies somewhere between these two extremes. This article describes how to help subordinates solve problems effectively in four steps.

Build a culture of education, knowledge and learning from mistakes

First and foremost, in the long run you need to build an environment in which subordinates are not afraid to ask questions, learn further and, most importantly, make mistakes. Because it is from mistakes that employees learn most. If you have zero tolerance for mistakes in your team, subordinates will never learn to solve problems or face new challenges on their own.

Let your subordinates learn different problem-solving methodologies

Never neglect the training and development of subordinates. There are various methodologies for solving problems. For example, have you heard of the "Kepner-Tregoe", "DMAIC" or "PDCA" methods? Alternatively, do you provide subordinates with training in, for example, project management such as PRINCE2? Enable subordinates to acquire theoretical knowledge and then use it in practice.

Appreciate subordinates who successfully solve problems on their own

Employees who take it upon themselves to solve problems and find effective solutions deserve praise. Motivate other employees by publicly praising the good work of those who do not fear challenges and come up with fresh and creative solutions to problems that come their way.

Set an example to subordinates

Of course, a manager must set an example to subordinates. And this is also true when it comes to problem solving. If you encounter the right type of problem, discuss it within the team. Consider what steps can be taken and what needs to be done, and show your subordinates how you yourself would solve the problem in practice.
