Four habits of good leaders: listen, protect focus, use technology well and demand performance

Listening to employees should not be a once-a-year event tied to an annual survey. Leaders need to gather information during normal work: in one-to-one conversations, meetings and informal contact. The next step matters just as much. If people repeatedly raise the same obstacle and see no response, they learn that speaking up is pointless. A manager does not have to grant every request, but must explain what can change, what cannot and why. The second area is work capacity. A calendar full of meetings, messages and alerts can create an impression of high activity while taking away the time people need for complex work. Leaders should not only add priorities. They must also decide what the team will stop doing, what can be simplified and what can wait. Before adding another task, a useful question is which current obligation the new task is supposed to replace. The third habit concerns technology. Automated summaries, shared systems and artificial intelligence can reduce administration significantly. They should not replace communication in situations where context, trust and emotion matter. A status update can be shared without a meeting. Conflict, professional uncertainty, a serious mistake or difficult feedback are better handled directly. A manager who checks a phone or screen during a sensitive conversation sends a message different from the words being spoken. The fourth area combines humanity with accountability. Good relationships do not mean lowering standards. They can create an environment in which people are more willing to accept difficult feedback, admit mistakes and ask for help early. A manager should be able to say both that the employee’s success matters and exactly what is not working. Such a conversation requires specific examples, an expected change and a date for follow-up. Artificial intelligence increases the importance of these activities precisely because it takes over simpler parts of management work. If a system prepares meeting notes, summarizes data or drafts a message, the saved time should not automatically be filled with more administration. It can be used for decisions, work with people and situations where an automated system does not know the full context. A practical leadership check therefore does not need to begin with a large assessment. Managers can ask what experience people repeatedly have of their leadership. Do employees receive a response when they raise a problem? Do they have time for focused work? Do they know when a message is enough and when a direct conversation is needed? And do they know exactly what is expected of them? These answers reveal leadership quality more accurately than the number of tools in use.
