Want to become a good leader? First overcome these five fears

Becoming an effective leader is not just about learning theory or acquiring the necessary knowledge in your field. More often, it requires a shift in mindset and approach. To become truly effective and sustainably successful, you need to overcome the following five fears.

Fear of being disliked

As INC.com points out, one of the greatest obstacles managers must overcome is the fear of not being liked. An effective leader must sometimes be the “bad boss” or the bearer of bad news. It is simply not possible to maintain good relations with everyone at all times. Accept that, as a leader, your popularity will always have limits.

Fear of insufficient expertise

Many managers suffer from what is known as imposter syndrome, namely doubting their own knowledge and abilities. You must overcome this fear and recognise that you genuinely have something to offer. Only then can you grow into a truly successful leader.

Fear of conflict

Problems and conflicts should never be ignored or swept under the carpet. A manager must be able to address conflict and face it directly.

Fear of making mistakes

Everyone makes mistakes and managers are no exception. These mistakes mustn't be fatal, but a good manager should be willing to take calculated risks and avoid the trap of anxious perfectionism.

Fear of responsibility for others' results

Many people struggle with the idea of being accountable for someone else’s work. It is a significant responsibility which should not be taken lightly; however, if you want to succeed in a leadership role, you must learn to overcome this fear.
