Incorporating humour into your team’s everyday work

When used appropriately, humour is a powerful tool to ease the serious nature of work, strengthen team cohesion and improve performance by helping team members view their tasks from a different perspective. Since laughter also heals and relieves stress, this article offers practical advice on incorporating humour into your leadership style and team’s daily work.

Provide opportunities for informal interaction

If you would like humorous conversations and moments to arise naturally, you must allow your team members to interact informally. Offer them a space where they can gather and engage in light conversation. If you happen to see them chatting and laughing during work hours, don't discourage it.

Allow employees to work independently

A relaxed and light-hearted atmosphere can only flourish in an environment where employees do not feel micromanaged. When team members have the autonomy to work independently and creatively – and the freedom to adapt their workspace or work style to their natural preferences – humour can emerge more spontaneously.

Celebrate minor victories

Celebrating minor victories offers an excellent opportunity to introduce humour into the workplace. Has someone delivered an outstanding performance? Is it someone’s birthday? Have you purchased a new coffee machine for the office? Or perhaps you have just landed a new client? All of these can be occasions for informal or lightly humorous mini-celebrations.

Use humour yourself, but in moderation

Humour in a team can only thrive if the team leader is open to it. Set an example by incorporating humour into your communication. However, always exercise moderation and make sure the humour remains appropriate and inclusive.

Introduce gamification

Incorporating game-like elements into your team’s workflow can give rise to amusing and engaging moments. Consider organising a competition for the most efficient employee of the week, or find another creative way to include gamification in your team’s daily routine.
