Digital automation (1/2): No jobs and no future?

In the near future, technology will eliminate many jobs and there are suggestions that this will happen at a surprisingly fast pace. As companies such as Google continue to develop driverless cars, for example, professional drivers may soon disappear.

Likewise Amazon is starting to build retail stores of the future, where everything necessary to purchase the goods will be taken care of by automatic sensors. Thus the staff headcount will be reduced. For those who prefer shopping online, orders will be delivered by drones instead of human couriers.

Our modern, digitally transformed world represents a considerable challenge for us. We need to create economic value for people whose jobs will vanish. Historically, we have seen that once automation puts an end to some types of jobs, they will never appear again.

By eliminating low-paid jobs, automation creates higher-paid jobs for educated employees. Today, however, even knowledge workers are threatened by artificial intelligence. This warning is brought by an article on the management-issues.com website.

Translation company: an interesting new model

So how might the future of work look? It may be the case that new ways of working will emerge, very different to those which exist at present. One very interesting example in this context is a startup called Stepes: it is the first chat-based translation app providing rapid language translation.

This is something highly demanded in the global marketplace. Most business applications – especially those meant to communicate with customers – cannot succeed if they translate only single words or short phrases: here context and cultural nuances are of great significance.
