Relocation: 2 questions to consider

You have received an interesting job offer which, however, requires moving to another city or even abroad. It may not be easy to decide whether relocation is the right thing for you.

So consider the following key questions. Check local job listings for possible opportunities: are there any which would somehow differ from what you are doing at the moment?

And imagine how important company culture could turn out to be if you are on your own in a new country or city with neither friends nor acquaintances.

Is it a good fit for you?

Certainly relocation is a tremendous opportunity for you. Nevertheless, you should thoroughly research your prospective employer or find out details concerning the given position.

If you discover on your very first day in the job that the team is not as friendly as you had expected or that the company culture sucks, it will be too late for you to say no without any problems. So investigate properly what potential there really is for you in relocation.

Take advantage of websites providing reviews from employees or ask someone you trust for their opinion. Social media might also reveal something about company culture in the new location.

If the employer will be the same as your current one and only the location will change, it is about the local company culture and whether it will differ from what you are used to. In the new city you will probably have no friends. So now company culture and the mindset of colleagues at the workplace suddenly become a factor.

Is there a demand for your expertise in the area?

What if the job doesn’t work out as you planned? Try to find out whether you would be able to obtain a new job easily in the event of losing your current one. You need to know this in advance. With a reasonable assurance that in such a case you would indeed be able to find another job, you will sleep much better.

For example, one PR professional left New York and accepted a PR director role in a local college in another US state. A few years later, the department was disbanded. The director in question had a mortgage but no further opportunity for deploying his particular skills and experience. The only thing he could do was to start his own business; however, he was not very well prepared for such a step.

Remember, when you are relocating, the unexpected may still happen. Amongst other things, your dog may be unhappy in your new location, concludes an article on the businessnewsdaily.com website.
