Managerial relaxation: basics of a healthy and sustainable working routine for a team leader

Team managers often have many responsibilities: they communicate with both company management and their subordinates, keep an eye on meeting the team's plans, and often deal with ad hoc tasks that sometimes overwhelm them. Here are some tips on how to stay cool as a manager and occasionally relax.

Bear in mind that subordinates understand you too are only human

Trying to fake emotions you do not actually feel at any given moment might lead to significant mental discomfort. Do not be afraid to come across as a genuine human being in front of your team members: you can, for instance, admit you are stressed out, going through a rough period in your personal life, or are simply not in a good mood.

Do not neglect socialising with friends and acquaintances

Dealing with a large workload while trying to balance your personal and work life means you may not find sufficient time to meet your friends. But they are often the people with whom you can talk about things you cannot discuss with team members and colleagues. And thanks to these talks, you might be able to keep a healthy distance from matters you are dealing with on a daily basis.

Learn to relax effectively (and actively)

Life is not just about working. Even if you are trying to set a good example to team members or want to help them as much as possible, you must also be able to schedule relaxation and rest. This does not mean you should sit on the sofa watching TV. Relaxation can be (and should be) active, for example in the form of sport.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle

As the PsychCentral website states, good mental health requires physical health too. Stick to a healthy lifestyle, follow a healthy sleep schedule, keep a healthy diet, drink enough water and engage in a sufficient amount of physical activity.
